A few days ago I was browsing around on Craigslist.org and came across a 15.4″ MacBook Pro with a 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chip, 2GB RAM, and a 100GB hard drive. Noticing that the specs were the same as MY MacBook Pro that I bought about a year ago, I was quite interested as to why they were only asking $680. I figured I could get a sweet deal and sell it on Ebay for twice as much. Here’s the actual post:
Selling a slightly used 15.4″ Macbook Pro. I’m asking for $680/obo but please do not lowball me, I am in no hurry to sell this machine. I use it only for word processing and internet use, so I don’t need such a powerful laptop. Here are the specs:
-15.4″ Macbook Pro
-2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo Processor
-2 Gigs Ram
-100 Gig HD
-Superdrive DVD+-RW Drive
-Airport Extreme
-Axio HardsleevePreloaded with
-Adobe Creative Suite CS3
-Microsoft Office 2008
-Mac OSX Leopard 10.5
-Final Cut Pro Studio
Naturally, I emailed the seller asking them to call me to discuss the product. I wasn’t about to get screwed! Linda, which probably isn’t her name, emailed me back, completely avoiding the fact that I asked her to call me. She told me she lives in the UK now and will ship through a company called TNT. She told me the company was comparable to FedEx and UPS and gave me this link:
http://cargoexpresstnt.com/about.tnt/index/details.html
After doing a bit of searching I discovered that “Linda Hamilton” of Manchester, UK was totally illegitimate. She’s posted all over Craigslist for the same ad in multiple locations.
If you come across this ad or one like it selling a MacBook Pro for such a low price, BEWARE! This is a scam! The best advice I have for Craigslist.org users is to never buy/sell to someone who doesn’t reside close to you.
Now, for you “Linda Hamilton”, if I find you, I’ll probably have an urge to shoot your face off.

This scam has been going on for a while now i first saw the post last month now it showed up againe in the couple of craigslist site i look at. my friend did some reserch and the shipping tnt is real but the site that you posted is the same on i had to go to and that one is out of cali.

Thanks for posting, this helped me divert a friend from danger! He is appreciative as well!
February 7th, 2008 at 1:36 am
add Lisa Carter to the scam list
Lisa Carter
similar thing - she’s out of town but wants to sell it and she’s “registered” it with Tnt Express. told me that they will handle the invoicing, etc. I actually called TNT Express to find out what their process is and basically they told me that they ONLY ship items, not take care of the money. aside from the run on sentences and weird punctuation, that gave away that it was a scam. guess it’s true what they say on craigslist - if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
February 18th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Add Megan Sneddon to the list of this scammers name.
February 21st, 2008 at 1:20 am
Do Not Send Any Money to these people using TNT shipping!!! My e-mails were from Megan Sneddon about an apple MacBook they are the same e-mails that everyone else has recieved about them paying for a 2 day shipping, but u have to send the money to someone else. They wanted me to make a payment to a Gordon McLeish by Western union. They send u a link to there made up TNT webpage, but if you to just TNT.com you can see that their link is fake. I called the real TNT and they said they have no such service where you send them the money. I hope someone finds these creeps and gives them what they deserve!!!!
February 21st, 2008 at 12:00 pm
thx. i was in the midst of a reply to ‘megan sneddon’ before i googled her name, and found this. of course it was too good to be true, i just really wanted that dang computer. i wouldn’t have gone so far as to send money, but you saved me from wasting my time and wondering about it, cheers.
February 21st, 2008 at 6:27 pm
Heh. I got a CL response from our dear Megan Sneddon too, and googled her and found this (plus a scottish soccer player).
Tis a shame, I’d love a Core 2 macbook for $400, lol.
February 25th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
wow. just two weeks ago i emailed a dennis from manchester for a macbook pro at $680. i did all sorts of research except google his name. i wired the money, went back to my house, got the inkling to google his name and i just about crapped my pants. i quickly called western union back and they sent the money right back to me. so i got lucky, but i can’t speak for everyone who’s fallen for it. if it’s too good to be true, it is too good to be true.
February 26th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Here is the response that I received…when answering the MacBook Ad on craigslist. This is defiantly a scam, and when I asked more about it….I got no response. How do we put this Scammers away???

Hello
I will pay for a 2 days delivery so you will receive the laptop within 3-4 days.

I have found a way for us to complete the deal safely and fast, and in this way you will receive the laptop in less than 3 days, if you move fast as well. The solution is provided by a worldwide delivery company called TNT. TNT is similar to Fedex, DHL or UPS and they will provide assistance in hadling the payment and delivery of the laptop.
With this procedure you will have the change to test the laptop before I receive my payment.
The procedure is explained on the TNT webpage and please click on the link below to the TNT website to see how we can complete the deal safely and fast directly from the website of the company.

Geezus…Thanks so much for this information!!! I almost got the money to send off for the MacBook to Manchester, UK! Thank goodness I got curious about the name “Megan Sneddon”. I googled it and this thread came up. Thank you SOOOO much!!!
March 8th, 2008 at 2:19 am
Here is an e-mail I got.
Hello,
The laptop is still available and I hope you are still interested.
My name is Ryan McCoy and I am now in Manchester, U.K.
This machine has been used for professional needs over the past year, it is in great condition and runs perfectly, and beyond evidence of normal use the laptop is in perfect shape.
The laptop is 11 Months old and still has 25 Months of Applecare warranty which is fully transferable. One more thing, it works on US voltage so you do not need a converter.
I have attached some pics with the laptop to this e-mail so you can see the condition of the laptop.
Please get back to me and let me know if you like the laptop if you’re really interested in buying it.
Thanks,
Ryan
I fell for it hook, line, and sinker. I am so pissed off, but I have learned my lesson with buying things through the internet. Always check everything about a site, including address’s, phone numbers, e-mail, and the company that it is supposedly with before you make the same mistake like I did.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:30 am
I have an idea. It won’t do much but I will help a little. I have been checking multiple cities on craigs’list and I have found the same people that scammed me. I think if the people that have had this happen to them start looking in different cities to find them and then report them as spam/overpost we can help other people from making the mistake and possibly slowing down their scam business.
March 10th, 2008 at 10:12 am
I’m glad I ran across this site. I almost bit. Add Warren Caldwell to the list.
>
March 12th, 2008 at 1:07 am
I am a victim of that scam. About a week ago, it showed up in San Diego craiglist and sure enough I was also looking for a great deal on laptop. Ryan Mccoy emailed me back saying the same thing about the laptop that he is now in UK …blah, …blah and TNT shipping method etc. It didn’t hit me at all because the website looked so real and it had all tracking numbers and barcodes attached to my email invoice. When i got home from Western Union, i had this feeling that it might have been a scam but didn’t really hit me yet. After two hours later, TNT (fake) emailed me back with an invoice of the overnight express plus tracking number and expected delivery time. Next morning came, no laptop! Thats when it hit me, i called up Western Union to cancel my $400 but i was too late. They already picked up my money . I’ve never been scammed before in my life but this definitely is a lesson learned. I hope they catch this people! And i should have researched first so maybe i would have found this pertinent information.
March 12th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
yes, this guy is going down….i have got the fbi involved and we all need to pack together to bring this fucker down. ryan mccoy…….be ready for the pain. carma is a bitch!!!!
March 13th, 2008 at 6:57 am
Thank you for pointing out this scam!
Found a similar one on a NH craigslist ad…by Warren Caldwell from Manchester, U.K. The email he sent to me has been changed a tiny bit from the posts above but the gist is still the same…
Hello,
The laptop is still available and I hope you are still interested. My name is Warren Caldwell and I am now in Manchester, U.K.

March 13th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Warren Caldwell almost got me.
I’m just glad I googled his name before I sent any money or anything. It’s the EXACT same e-mail and everything. I’m a bit bummed because I was looking forward to a smokin’ deal on a Macbook Pro…but I’m so relived at the same time that I didn’t get taken.
Beware of the $680 Macbook Pro!
March 14th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Thanks for posting this! I came close to falling into the trap too, but the website posted to me was:
http://expresstnt.co.uk/overnight/index/details.html
Since I’d never heard of TNT, I was suspicious and ran a google search which showed me your blog. Incidentally, my “seller” was a Warren Caldwell from Manchester, UK. He posted the same price and spec’d laptop.
March 16th, 2008 at 2:00 am
We should try to toy with thease people, Warren olmost got me and when i was reading this blog post i olmost busted in tears because i really needed the laptop and olmost fell for it.
We should say were in town and were going to pick the laptop up and pay in person…
March 17th, 2008 at 10:30 am
how about this one?
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/ele/606350349.html
March 17th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
I fell for this, too. Well, almost. I got the same emails from a Warren Caldwell and I gave him my address but no bank info or anything. As soon as I gave him my address for the shipping, I never heard back from him. It’s been since Saturday. I hope he doesn’t use my address for anything. Does anyone know anything about this? Watch out for Warren Caldwell!
March 18th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
I just had the same thing happen to me from a Warren Caldwell trying to sell me a Macbook for $435! Also the person receiving the payment was his ‘agent’ Andrew Lonegan.
When I went to the Western Union they said that t was a scam! Thank god they did or I probably would have given them the money and lost $435. I even tried to search the BBB for this TNT Express service, but since there is a legit shipping agency called TNT, no complaints came up.
Hopefully anyone thinking about going through with this will find this blog.
March 18th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

March 20th, 2008 at 8:11 am
I almost fell for this like an idiot. I was about to send the money to this guy, Warren Caldwell, out in Manchester, UK. I got the same emails that were posted above, but it sounded too good, too correct, too straight, I don’t know, so I decided to google the name of the guy and i came across with this website. Thank you so much for your posting. The scam was posted on craigslist for MAnhattan, Kansas. This is the email of the guy that I contacted:
warren.caldwell27@gmail.com
and the website of the TNT thing http://shippingnextday.com/about.tnt/index/details.html
BE REALLY CAREFUL GUYS!!
March 21st, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Well, Miguel, I *did* fall for it like an idiot. Somewhere Andrew Lonegan and “Warren” are laughing it up big time at my expense.
If I ever meet ‘em in a dark alley, they’ll know it.
Wish I’d found this page just a couple days ago…
March 28th, 2008 at 10:14 am
This needs to be on Dateline or something. lol Heres an e-mail I got about a Ps3 but I knew it was a scam as soon as I read it.
Hi there,
Sorry for my late reply but I’m currently in England, Wolverhampton. I was promoted to Sales Administrator and I have to take a 6 months trainning program here in UK, before I’ll be back home, in States.
The PS 3 is still available, in perfect condition, and I will sell it only in US because here the warranty and the SonyCare are US registered.
I can’t use the PS 3 here in UK because it works on 110 V. I didn’t know about this problem when I moved here. Also I don’t have time to play because I work all day.
I have attached some pics with the Playstation to this e-mail so you can see the condition of the PS 3. I bought the PS 3 2 months ago and it still has 22 months of Sony transferable warranty remaining .
I hope you are still interested and we can make the deal happen right away.
Since I can’t meet you and make the exchange, I would like to use a service that will help us with that:
http://www.tnt.com/tnt.express.wolverhampton.depot/third_party_service.html
TNT is a worldwide delivery company (like Fedex, DHL or UPS). You can see from their procedure that you will be able to check the PS 3 before I receive the payment. If you are in a hurry, I will use 2 day delivery (on my expense).
Let me know what you think.
Best Wishes,
Jenny

Add Andrew Hogan to the list..same old song and dance.
I did find another ad–same UK ordeal– but this one offered to post it as a buy it now auction through eBay just for me. I started to maybe think it was legit until I realized the terrible grammar and punctuation at the end of the email.
This guy’s name was Robert Koln.
Both were ads found on craigslist.
Hi,
If you want to buy my apple macbook pro … we will complete this deal through eBay.It’s more safe for both of us.
I will post a buy it now auction for you on eBay for $1000 and I will email you the buy it now link.
I have everything prepared and if you are really interested and have the money please send me your eBay user name and I will start the transaction through eBay.
The reason why I am selling the macbook so cheap is because I had to came in London,United Kingdom with business. My wife will arrange the delivery for me.She is in US.Free shipping
P.S I’ve 4 apple macbooks for sale.Brand new in original box.Contact me if you want to buy more. You will get 20% discount if you will buy more

April 17th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Same here. Got too suspicious about a Macbook for 400 and Macbook Pro for 660. Emailed both of them and got pretty much the same email.
Thomas Haley and
Steven Lewis.
One actually suggested using DHL and led me to a fake but well made DHL site.

1st Rule of online buying
NEVER SEND WESTERN UNION!!!
2ND Rule
NEVER SEND WESTERN UNION!!!
3RD Rule Only use a service such as Paypal
I think its time for the world to go after WESTERN UNION.
I asked them if they had a DB on complaints thinking they might be able to help me to determine if a name or address has a lot of complaints. Oh No we don’t do that! Of course not. That would be the responsible thing to do. And Oh Yea It would cut down on their profit’s. DUH
April 19th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Now in Sacramento’s Craig’s List. Same scam. Here is the e-mail:
Hello,
The laptop is still available and I hope you are still interested. My name is Kyle Mosson and I am now in Manchester, U.K.
This machine has been used for professional needs over the past 10 Months, it is in great condition and runs perfectly, and beyond evidence of normal use the laptop is in perfect shape. The warranty is good until June 2010 and it is fully transferable. One more thing, it works on US voltage so you do not need a converter.
I have attached some pics with the laptop to this e-mail so you can see the condition of the laptop.
Please get back to me and let me know if you like the laptop if you’re really interested in buying it.
Thanks,
Kyle

“Kyle Mosson” just tried to pull this on me. The deal was way too good to be true and the whole thing sounded really fishy, like he suddenly moved to England before selling the laptop. He sent me this link (http://online-webshipping.co.uk/eshipping/webship.high.html) which is obviously a really crappy fake.
I emailed him back a goatse pic for good measure.

Looks like another one. My wife just got this email after inquiring to a post on the DC area Craigslist.

Here is the transaction info: http://online-webshipping.dhl.co.uk/eshipping/webship.high.html
With DHL, things are very simple and I can overnight the laptop, if you are in a hurry. Let’s take this one step at the time. The next step would be for you to send me your name and address and then I will going to DHL with the Macbook and making the delivery arrangements. After that DHL will send you a confirmation that they have the laptop and they are ready to ship it to you. They will also send you a set of instructions on how to complete your payment to them. You follow the instructions and complete your end and DHL will deliver the laptop to you. After you receive the laptop you will test it (you will have 5 days to do that), and if you are completely satisfied with it, you will instruct DHL to release the payment to me and the deal will be final. So now we must take the first step, which is for you to send me your name and address and then I can make the arrangements from my end.
Please let me know soon. David

Just received the same email from a “Warren Duggan”. He’s using the scam on the Seattle Craigs List.
I contacted DHL international and there is no such process or website.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Wow…I am SO thankful I googled the name ‘Warren Duggan’ and ‘Warren Caldwell’ to check into this. I was considering that deal and knew I was getting something way too cheap and knew my questions weren’t being specifically answered for a reason. I don’t know how people get away with this. I inquired about the same one awhile back and had the same person but different last name.

Hello,
I recently saw this ad on craigs list:
http://hamilton.en.craigslist.ca/sys/717261289.html
I got this email reply when I emailed the person:
My name is Amy Benson and I am now in London, United Kingdom (I was sent here wih my work).
After you receive the Laptop you will have a 5 days inspection period to check it and see that all is in order. If you decide to keep it, you will instruct UPS to release the funds to me. If you decide not to keep it, you can send it back free of charge and UPS will refund you the same day.
It’s brand new, in box, 100% perfect condition. FULL warranty. It has been received as a gift so I don’t know it’s exact price, I hope the price it’s attactive enough…
I made an order for a new TV for UK use and I need the money from this sale to pay it.
We can close a deal ASAP.
Obviously we need a way to complete this deal that will allow us to make sure we receive what we are after.
I have found a way for us to complete the deal safely and fast, and in this way you will receive the Laptop in less than 2 days, if you move fast as well. The solution is provided by UPS, which will handle the payment and delivery of the Laptop.
I have found a procedure that will allow you to pay for the Laptop only after you will receive it and through this way you will see it and test it before I receive my payment.
You can visit http://www.ups.com for more information. I’m sure you’ve heard about them, I worked with them many times.
Like I said, I will pay for a 2 days delivery so you will receive the Laptop right away.
I will explain to you step by step how this will work:
1) First, you will have to send me your full name and address. I will need them for the shipping.
2) I go to UPS and leave the Laptop onto your name as the intended receiver.
3) UPS will check the Laptop to see if everything is OK with it and also the legal papers that will come along with the Laptop.
4) UPS will send you a delivery notification to let you know they have the Laptop, in which you will be told that they have the Laptop and that they checked it.
5) At this point you will have to go to a Western Union Agent Location and make the money deposit on the UPS payment agent name for the amount we agreed.
6) After you make the deposit you will have to send the info about the money deposit to UPS (MTCN, sender’s name and address)
7) UPS will verify the payment informations and if everything is in order they will deliver the Laptop to you .
I will pay UPS for the shipping and you will pay Western Union for the Money Transfer fee .
Let me know if we can do this.
Thank you,
Amy
This looks like a scam to me!
Cheers.

I unfortunately fell for it. 650$ gone. Found them again on craiglist. They used Amy McGuire, Andrew Norton as the DHL agent and the second time it was Emily Pecot and the royalmail.
The emailads they used are:
amy.s.dreams@hotmail.com
amythedreamer79@hotmail.com
emilypecot77@hotmail.com
It is always an emailaddress from hotmail. Is there no chance to find out who they really are?
June 17th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
If you are a victim of this scam you need to go to the police.
The header of the emails they have sent to you contains the IP address assigned to the user by the Internet Service Provider. Knowing the IP address the police can obtain the information (they might need a court order) who had that IP address at that time. This is your chance.
Good luck!
I communicated with the same (?) scammers but I new from their first reply they were scam artists.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised - the price did seem too good to be true.
amy_1979.28@hotmail.com posted so the google spiders will find it.
Anyway, I’m wondering if the people who have been scammed know where their money was picked up - using that info, either the police could be alerted (since “Amy” is probably a creature of habit) and they could run a sting, or we could work with a local person in the UK to photograph this person, just to post their face and info all over the internet……

I just did some research and the ip of the fake Royal Mail site is 202.67.215.54 and originate from Hong Kong.
June 24th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
they tried to get me to but I new it was fake when they started asking me to send them money using western union. when ever people ask for western union its usally FAKE… unless you can give them the check and get the item at the same time. there are so many scams. another good one is that people will buy something from you and send you western union check worth more than what the item is worth and they ask you to send you the remaining amount. someone did it to me I took the checks to western union to check and make sure no one had used them and the ones I had were copies the originals where used a year previous to win I recieved it.
anyways Be Smart use paypal and a credit card so that the credit card company can give you your money back just incase Paypal can’t.

I can confirm that they showed up at 10am EDT in asheville.craigslist.org as Amy with the address: Bold Dreamer . The exact text is as follows [along with a few jpegs]:
Hello,
The laptop is still available and I hope you are still interested. My name
is Amy and I am now in Manchester, U.K.
This machine has been used for professional needs over the past 10 Months,
it is in great condition and runs perfectly, and beyond evidence of normal
use the laptop is in perfect shape. The warranty is good until June 2010 and
it is fully transferable. One more thing, it works on US voltage so you do
not need a converter.
I have attached some pics with the laptop to this e-mail so you can see the
condition of the laptop.
Please get back to me and let me know if you like the laptop if you’re
really interested in buying it.
Thanks,
Amy

I agree this is a much more secure method of completing the transaction and I think it is a wonderful idea. I wish USPS did things this nicely. So then the next step would be to provide you with my shipping information which I can gladly provide you with.

Obviously we need a safe way to complete this deal that will allow us to make sure we receive what we are after.I have found a way for us to complete the deal fast (3 days) and easy. The solution is Royalmail. Royalmail is the UK’s national mail carrier ( such as USPS in the United States) and they will provide assistance in handling the payment and delivery of the items .With this process you will be able to check the items before I receive the payment.Let me know if you agree with this!

I am indeed interested in the sale. Now the question is how to go about paying for it. do you have a preferred method of payment, or do you have paypal?
thanks very much for giving me the opportunity to purchase this as I do not have the necessary funds to purchase a brand new macbook.

Thank you for telling me this people!
I actually wrote to 2 different people in Craigslist about the Macbooks they were selling at a low price and here are their replies:
1st email: Macbook price $470
Hello,
My name is Lucya Markio and I am now in London, United Kingdom (I was sent here wih my work).
I made an order for new furniture here in UK use and I need the money from this sale to pay it.
We can close a deal ASAP.
Obviously we need a way to complete this deal that will allow us to make sure we receive what we are after.
I have found a way for us to complete the deal safely and fast, and in this way you will receive the item in less than 2 days, if you move fast as well. The solution is provided by UPS, which will handle the payment and delivery of the item.
I have found a procedure that will allow you to pay for the item only after you will receive it and through this way you will see it and test it before I receive my payment.
You c an visit http://www.ups.com for more information. I’m sure you’ve heard about them, I worked with them many times.
Like I said, I will pay for a 2 days delivery so you will receive the item right away.
I will explain to you step by step how this will work:
1) First, you will have to send me your full name and address. I will need them for the shipping.
After you receive the item you will have a 5 days inspection period to check it and see that all is in order. If you decide to keep it, you will instruct UPS to release the funds to me. If you decide not to keep it, you can send it back free of charge and they will fully refund you the same day.
2) I go to UPS and leave the item onto your name as the intended receiver.
3) UPS will check the item to see if everything is OK with it and also the legal papers that will come along with the item .
4) UPS will send you a delivery notification to let you know they have the item , in which you will be told that they have the item and that they checked it.
5) At this point you will have to go to a Western Union Agent Location and the money deposit on the UPS payment agent name for the amount we agreed.
6) After you make the deposit you will have to send the info about the money deposit to UPS (MTCN, sender’s name and address)
7) UPS will verify the payment informations and if everything is in order they will deliver the item to you .
I will pay UPS for the shipping and you will pay Western Union for the Money Transfer fee .
Let me know if we can do this.
Thank you, Lucya

I just got my response from Amy, too. I began an email, googled, and found this blog, so THANK YOU! I’ve added her to my blocked list.
A quick question, though, especially from those that sent more than an email. The original post said to send a phone number, so I did. Any one have any trouble with giving that out? Do I need to worry about this, or just expect a random phone call? I’d hate to have to get a new number.

The process works like this, I will go at Royal Mail’s office and let the package in their possession and start the process, they will notify you about this and send you an email with an invoice with the tracking number and the instruction on how to complete the transaction. You’ll have to send them the payment for the item, after your transfer is verified the package will be on his way to your address, You’ll have 5 days inspection period from the moment you have the package. If you’re satisfied with the purchase you can instruct them to release the funds to me.If not you can return the item and Royal Mail will make a full refund.
So if you want to make this happen please provide me your full name and shipping address. I will support the shipping and handling cost.
